Before you purchase a new embroidery machine it’s important that you ask yourself a few simple questions, and then figure out the answers.

So, in no particular order, what do you need to think about before buying an embroidery machine.

  1. Business or pleasure? Is this embroidery machine gonna’ be used purely for hobby use, or will it be used for business?
  2. Size matters. What is the size of embroidery field you’ll want to sew? Like I just said, size matters.
  3. How much do you want to spend? Or, maybe that should be, how much can you afford to spend? Of course, the answer to this one could be very reliant upon your answers to #1 and #2.

Embroidery Machine – Business Use or Hobby Use?

Let’s go back to question #1. If you want an embroidery machine for hobby use only then there are plenty to choose from. Prices start at around the $500 mark for a new embroidery machine (you might also find a pre-owned machine if you’re lucky), but, as with most things these days you can spend a whole lot more. Remember that an embroidery machine for your own home use doesn’t probably need to be very fast, but if you need an embroidery machine for business use then time’s money, and you’ll probably need to buy a machine which can sew plenty of stitches at a fast speed.

Embroidery Machine – Size of Embroidery Field?

The second question you need to ask yourself before buying an embroidery machine is about the field size you wish to embroider. Some of the smaller, hobby embroidery machines will only embroider a maximum field size of 4″ x 4″ without the need to re-hoop to continue with your design. Re-hooping is always an option but can get to be a bit of a pain in the proverbial, it’s just opening up the possibility for errors to creep into your work. If you want a larger embroidery field option then you need to choose an embroidery machine which has a larger sewing area. Even some home type embroidery machines can work up to an area of 10″ x 16″, and some commercial machines will go even larger than that. If you are happy with a 4″ x 4″ embroidery field then you could save yourself quite a bit of money against the larger machines.

Embroidery Machine – What’s Your Budget?

This question is usually high up in the list of priorities, for lots of things in life not just an embroidery machine. As with many items these days you can spend a little (relatively speaking) or you can spend a lot. The price you have to pay will depend largely on your answers to the above two questions. Let’s just say that for a home embroidery machine you’ll be looking at prices starting at around $500 (and going up to several thousand), and for a commercial embroidery machine you’ll be looking at prices starting at around $8,000 going up to tens of thousands of dollars.  A single headed embroidery machine can only deal with one garment at a time and will cost anywhere up to $20,000, but if you’ve got more money (and more orders) then a double headed embroidery machine will deal with two garments at once but set you back anywhere from around $30,000.

You know what they say – two heads are better than one.

Designs For Your Embroidery Machine

Remember that you don’t only have to buy an embroidery machine, you also have to get a way to get the designs from your computer and onto your new embroidery machine. There are three basic ways to do this, depending on the type of embroidery machine you buy.

  • Embroidery Machine Memory Card – this is by far the most common method, you can pick up pre-programmed memory cards for around $60 (some may cost up to $100) and each card will have a variety of designs on it. Just slot the memory card into the embroidery machine and choose the design you want to sew.  If your embroidery machine only accepts memory cards (which is usual for all embroidery machines in the lower price ranges) then you should also buy a card writer. This is actually a small box which plugs into your computer and enables you to write your own designs from the computer onto a blank memory card. These cards are reusable, so after you’ve embroidered your design you can erase it and start again.
  • Embroidery Machine With USB or Serial Cable – this connects your embroidery machine directly with your computer. Only the more expensive home embroidery machines will give you this option, and remember that your computer will have to be close to your machine for it to work.
  • Embroidery Machine with Floppy Disc – the other common way of getting designs from the computer onto an embroidery machine is to use a floppy disc.  Some of the more expensive embroidery machines are equipped with a floppy disk slot – it’s simple, you just save your design from the computer to a floppy disc and pop it into the machine.
