When someone asks me what is the best sewing machine for quilting I would love to just be able to give them one simple answer but it’s not quite that easy. There is no single machine that is going to be best for everyone. So rather than just picking one machine and telling you that this one is the best sewing machine for quilting we have researched a number of forums, shopping sites and countless customer reviews to put together a list of machines that would be in contention for the title of best sewing machine for quilting.
In our research we found a number of brands that were coming up over and over again so we would say that the top sewing machine brands for quilting would be Brother, Janome and Bernina. Below we will give you some more specific model numbers and a little more information about each machine.
If we had to choose one machine for quilting the Brother CS6000i would probably be our top pick. The list price is $449 but this particular machine can be purchased on Amazon for around $150 which is a very good deal. This machine also has over 1000 reviews online and an average user rating of about 4.5 stars. This model is a free arm, computerized sewing machine with 60 stitch functions, it has a computerized stitch selection LCD screen, auto threading, auto set drop-in bobbin and a number of other features that just make it a pleasure to use.
Most of the people that reviewed this machine online said that it offers you an incredible value for your money. People agree that it is very easy to use and most of the customers are saying that they would highly recommend this machine. Even people that have used other, far more expensive machines in the past would recommend the Brother CS6000i.
Janome Memory Craft 6500P
The Janome Memory Craft 6500P is another machine that is getting excellent reviews from customers online. In addition to good reviews from customers it is also getting very good reviews from places like Consumer Reports and various sewing websites. This particular machine is much more expensive than the one mentioned above (check current price). However, it’s getting a lot of great reviews and people are reporting that it is very durable and can withstand a lot of use and that it also has a number of great features.
One review came from someone that said they use this machine to do just about everything from quilting to crafting to general sewing repairs. This person says that there is nothing that they cannot do with their Janome.
Bernina 440 – Bernina 730
Bernina makes a number of sewing machines that are great for quilters but these are very high end machines that are very expensive. For example the Bernina 440 is getting excellent reviews online but it costs about $3500. The Bernina 730 is also getting excellent reviews but it cost about $8199.
The Bernina 730 may be expensive but it is an excellent machine. A review on the website wired.com says that because of the stitch regulator which controls the needle speed this machine will give freehand users “the sensation of painting with thread”. That review is more of a comment on its embroidery ability however. This machine has sturdy metal bobbins and excellent tension control. It also has some very easy to use integrated software.
As you can see there are sewing machine options in every price range imaginable. The Bernina machines are great but they are very expensive. The Janome Memory Craft 6500 is also an excellent machine and is much more affordable than the Bernina machines. And of course the Brother CS6000i is the least expensive of the options that we have outlined here but is also getting fantastic reviews from customers and is a very good quality machine.
I would love to tell you that machine “X” is the best sewing machine for quilting but you will need to look over the features of each machine and consider your budget before you decide which sewing machine is the best one for you.
